Functional surfaces


In the Nanoplast project, iridescent structural colors have been demonstrated using nanostructures. The colors are obtained from different nanopatterns on the surface of black plastic parts. When the sample is tilted the colors are changing – creating a glitter effect.


The nanopatterns are diffraction gratings, where the grating of each pixel has a different period and orientation. 

The colors are obtained entirely from the nanostructures without any pigments.

The glitter effect has been designed in collaboration between DTU-Nanotech and DTU-Fotonik.
